The Sound of One Frog Croakin'
This is probably the most worrisome chart ever:

Hypoxic is scientese for "Is it just me or is there no air in here?"
The chart is from this article.
What you see there, in that chart, is exponential growth. Check out this link to see how quickly you can get from the width of a hand (or a frog) to the outer limits of the atmosphere by folding a piece of paper.
Speaking as an amphibian, I've been on both sides of the whole water thing. If the growth in that chart continues, it won't be long before everything in the ocean is dead. Any guesses what that means for the rest of us?
Just sayin'.
Get hoppin'.

In permaculture, as in life, the core of any problem is inhabited by a solution usually being overlooked. In the case of the anoxic regions we have an opportunity latent in the incredibly rich nutrients of the nitrate and phosphate fertilizers pouring out of the Mississippi, Nile, Huang Po, Mekong, Amazon, etc.
Lets string kelp lines between the rusting oil platforms, let the kelp oxygenate the dead zones, and then harvest the kelp to turn into biofuel, food and fertilizer!
It should pay back quickly enough to be scalable even without tax dollars being invested or Kyoto credits being traded.
Yum! Sushi!
